Thermometers have been used to measure temperature over the centuries. Out of seven physical quantities, the temperature is second to only time for being the most measured physical quantity. Thermometers are of two types; contact and non-contact thermometer. Non-contact thermometer measures temperature accurately over a distance. The distance can be as less as the fraction of an inch or as long as a mile. They are mainly used in cases when other thermometers cannot be used.
Contact and non-contact thermometers both have their fair share of pros and cons; infrared temperature guns have gained more popularity during recent times because of the coronavirus outbreak. This infection being contagious in nature requires social distancing and zero physical contact between individuals. Fever is checked to see the presence of this infection using non-contact thermometers because other digital thermometers can be a source of the spread of this infection further. Other thermometers require constant disinfection after each use but infrared thermometer can be used on hundreds of individuals without the need for disinfection.
Non-contact infrared thermometers measure temperature through measuring black body radiation emitted by the body. These thermometers have many different names; laser thermometer (laser is used to help target the thermometer) or temperature guns (they are able to infer temperature through a distance). Different types of infrared thermometers are; spot infrared thermometers, infrared thermal imaging, and infrared scanning system. They have a lens and a thermophile. The lens focuses infrared light rays onto the thermophile. Thermophile, in turn, absorbs and converts these rays into heat. Heat is then converted to electricity which is sent to the detector.
These thermometers besides being easy to use; are accurate as well. They are also kid’s friendly as children are a bit impatient and may not wait for 2 minutes to check their temperature. It is essential to keep a non-contact infrared thermometer at home especially these days; to keep checking your temperature and avoiding contact between different individuals to control the coronavirus infection spread in the same house, following the no-contact rule.
