ANTISEPTICS, HAND SANITIZER
Antiseptics are substances that, when coming contact with microorganisms can either kill them or stop their growth. In 1966, a nursing student Lupe Hernandez first gave the idea to use alcohol-based gel for cleaning hands. However, it gained popularity in 2009 when the swine flu pandemic broke out and people started carrying it around for hand sanitizing. Before that, it was only used in institutions like hospitals, offices, etc.
Antiseptics have two groups; washes and rubs. Antiseptics wash products include antibacterial soaps, body wash, etc. Rubs are the leave-on products also called hand sanitizers. Keeping hands clean is very important to your health. Hands are the easiest way for microorganisms’ transmission. Touching different surfaces with your hands and then touching your eyes, mouth or nose with those hands can transmit those nasty microbes to your body that are already looking for every possible opportunity to get inside your body and cause infections.
One must keep a hand sanitizer while going out as soap and water may not be available everywhere and you have to get rid of those bacteria. They are very easy to carry; you can carry them inside your bags, purse, etc. They are time-saving compared to hand washing, inactivate/kill microbes very quickly and compared to sinks, they are easily accessible. Their toleration is better compared to using soap and water and they are important to improve skin condition.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are best hand sanitizers while the efficacy of alcohol-free hand sanitizer has not been proven yet. Alcohol-based versions of sanitizers containing 60-70% alcohol are most effective. Compared to normal soap and water, alcohol-based hand sanitizers’ efficacy is more and their toleration is better comparatively. They are the best hand sanitizers also because; World Health Organization (WHO) has included them in the list of essential medicines, which are effective, and the safest in a health care system. Even during recent times, doctors and health care professionals suggest carrying a hand sanitizer while going out to keep you safe from the coronavirus. Use hand sanitizer while you are out and once you are back you can wash your hands with soap and water.
